Save yourself a few bucks at GoDaddy

If you use GoDaddy to register your domain names you can save a few bucks each time you register a new domain if you do it via Bustaname.com.

The normal Godaddy domain registration cost for a dot com domain is close to ten dollars. If you do a domain search at Bustaname and then choose to register through Godaddy it is $6.95 plus a bit of tax or some other small charge. You end up paying $7.15 from my experience.

The Bustaname site is also useful for doing some domain name research. It allows you to enter two or three keywords and it will make suggestions for you.

Even if you are not interested in using Godaddy it is a worthwhile site to visit. You do have the option to register domains through other companies when doing it via Bustaname.

I have created a quick video showing the domain registration process using Bustaname.com and GoDaddy. You can see it at registeradomaintutorial.com.

Take note: when using Bustaname the Godaddy site will show the cost at $9.99 until checkout. Once you checkout the discounted prices should be visible.

Interesting few weeks – backup, backup

It has been a while since I have written a post on here. The main reason has been due to technology challenges. The main thing to say about all this is to ensure you have backups of your data. This includes your local computer and any hosted sites on the internet.

I had my computer at home crash not once but two times in a matter of days. I also had one of my sites hacked. See the graphic below.  I guess they did it for fun. Tennis-fanatic.com was the site the hacker targetted.

Tennis-fanatic.com hacked

Lucky for me whoever decided to do this only replaced on page. It seems that it was someone from Turkey or has something to do with Turkey that decided to be a pain in the neck. Could not tell for sure as the text was not in english.

I must spend some time to read about how to prevent this happening again. Once again the main thing is to have backups. Don’t just rely on your webhost having a backup. Keep a backup on a USB or DVD and another computer. You can never be too sure.

One fun thing that happened recently was my daughter turned 6. She was so excited.

Blogging Tips from Sherman Hu

Nowadays so many internet marketing strategies revolve around setting up a blog to promote this and that. Creating a blog can be done in as little as 5 minutes if you use a service like blogger. The problem with using blogger is that you do not have full control over the system you are using. Also the domain is not yours. Blogger could go belly up and all your work is gone.

A better option is to use blogging software like WordPress, TypePad or Movable Type hosted on your own domain. By using one of the previous blogging software programs you can install them on your own domain. By going this route You also have total control over the site.

If you do decide to go with this option the problem that you now face is that you have to manage all of this yourself. You need to know how to register a domain, setup hosting, setup the blog and then design and optimize the blog, and that is all before you even think about what to write.

If you have a technical background all of the above is quite simple, however you may just end up with an ordinary looking blog as it takes some skill and experience to take your blog to the next level.

Sherman Hu is one guy who knows what he is talking about when it comes to blogging. I first heard of Sherman through my involvement in Stompernet. He is on the faculty. More recently he became a Facebook friend and I have been keeping an eye on the stuff he is working on.

Just the other day I came across an interview Sherman did with Jerry West. Sherman is asked 10 important blogging questions as asked by Jerry West or his members at WebMarketingNow.com. You can listen to the interview or read the transcript if you go to ShermanLive.com.

It is well worth a visit as there is a lot of great content relating to blogging. I suggest you head over and check it out.

If you are like me and really want to get inside WordPress and learn from a pro, Sherman has a great site dedicated to taking you to the next level with WordPress. You can see for yourself at WordPressTutorials.com. It is worth a visit just to sign up for the free tips.
